Hidden Gems of the LA Law Library: Treasure Hunting in the Stacks

By Sarah Martin

Sometimes, the most elusive resources are the ones hiding in plain sight. As a lifelong researcher and newer FCIL librarian, I’m excited to share my journey of discovering and revealing hidden gems in LA Law Library’s global law collection.

One of my most exciting discoveries was a collection of North Korean law (yes, you read that right), a rare and fascinating glimpse into the legal system of this enigmatic nation. As I delved deeper, I discovered a treasure trove of historical legal resources. Other exciting discoveries include:

  • Roman statutes that offer a fascinating glimpse into the foundations of modern legal systems.
  • Mexican state civil codes that provide a unique window into the legal frameworks of our southern neighbors.
  • Preserved leatherbound Dutch gazettes that reveal the legal and political landscape of the Netherlands during a transformative era of growth and change.

From customary and religious law to Soviet statutes, the shelves at LA Law Library are filled with resources that could help your next international law scholar, curious patron, or niche legal expert. Another real treasure trove is our rare book collection, a time capsule of early California and British law materials that date back to the 16th century and beyond. Each volume is like a window into the legal and political landscape of bygone eras, from the early development of common law to the legal history of the Golden State.

With each reference request and visiting researcher or FCIL librarian, I have had the opportunity to venture deeper into the stacks, uncovering new marvels. From dusty tomes to forgotten folders, every shelf and box has revealed a piece of the collection’s puzzle, a piece of history waiting to be uncovered. And yet, despite my efforts, I’ve barely scratched the surface. There are still rows upon rows of unexplored materials, waiting to be shared with the world. It’s a daunting task, but one that fills me with excitement and anticipation for the next discovery, the next “aha” moment, and the next opportunity to share our library’s hidden treasures with the FCIL community.

So, fellow legal researchers, the next time you’re stuck on an FCIL question, I invite you to explore our collection first. You never know what hidden gems you might uncover, or how our resources might help you crack the case. Come and dig in – our shelves are waiting! (Plus, you’ll give me an excuse to spend some more time with our cool books.)
